Program Description

General Information:

Applications for the Southeast Missouri Carpenters' Apprenticeship Program are accepted Monday through Friday between 8:00 am - 12:00 Noon and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.  The Training Center is located at 813 Enterprise Street in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Upon completion of an application the individual will be presented with a list of our signatory contractors.  All applicants are responsible for securing their own job with a signatory contractor.  The Southeast Missouri Carpenters' Apprenticeship Program provides training in Carpentry, Welding and Millwright work.

Selection Information:

Once the applicant has secured a job he must present a Letter of Intent from the signatory contractor.  The Letter of Intent is a letter from the Contractor stating that he is willing to hire the applicant, the percent of Journeyman pay that he will start at and the date he will start work.  The minimum Apprentice pay rate is 50% of the Journeyman pay rate.

Once the Letter of Intent is received:

1.    The applicant is presented with The Southeast Missouri Carpenters' Substance Abuse Policy.  The Substance Abuse Policy must be read and accepted by the applicant by signing that he/she has read and accepts the terms of the Substance Abuse Policy.

A.    Once the applicant accepts the terms and conditions of the Substance Abuse Policy he/she is sent for testing at a local testing facility in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

B.    Normally, the results of the test are available the following business day.  After a negative test is received from the testing facility, the applicant has to come back to initiate the necessary paperwork to enroll him into the Apprenticeship Program of the Southeast Missouri Carpenters.  The applicant is registered with the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training as an Apprentice.

C.    After the applicant completes the necessary paperwork at the Training Center he/she then must present himself/herself to the Union Hall whereby he/she will be required to purchase a work permit and start work with the Contractor.

The Apprentice is required to attend Training at the Carpenters' Training Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri for 40 hours of Training once every 3 months.  The Apprentice and Contractor will be notified by mail as to the scheduled week of training.  The Apprentice is required to attend this training until he completes all the necessary steps and advances to Journeyman; which normally takes approximately 4 years.  As the Apprentice advances through the training he/she is given raises as he progresses.  If the Apprentice does not attend Training during his scheduled week he/she will be placed on probation and then suspended from the Program.
